Decorating While Broke

Updated: Apr 15, 2018

Just because you don’t have a tonne of money, doesn’t mean you can’t have style! I’ve transformed some dingy little places into personal paradises.

So, if you’re tight on funds, fret not my friends. I’ve outlines some helpful tips to show you can decorate on a tight budget.

1. Repurpose & Reuse

Have a look around your house to see what can be re-purposed. Sometimes all it takes is a little paint to bring an old piece of furniture back to life. Even if the item you have is broken, chances are it can be repurposed into something else. For example, an old stool or chair can make for a fantastic side table!

2. Know Where to Look

Don’t even bother heading into a furniture, or big box store. Before you commit to spending any money on furnishing your place ask friends and family if they are getting rid of anything.

If no one in your immediate circle is looking to give items away, try online sites in their 'free' section. Sometimes it takes some digging to find a good freebie.

Finally- head to the thrift store! I’ve been able to find brand name items for a steal.

3. DIY Artwork

Abstract paintings are the simplest (and easiest!) way to inject some life into your space. Simply pull the colours your room uses and have fun on paper or an old canvas. If you’re not the most artistic you can grab some free prints off the internet and frame.

4. Small Touches

Not a huge fan of your dresser? Don’t go out and buy a new one! Simply re-do the hardware. This can change its entire look and feel.

5. Display Your Items

One of the reasons why items look so nice in a store is because they have been displayed nicely. So, why not follow suit? Instead of having a pile of books on a table, try stacking them.

If an item isn’t working with your space or is an eyesore- get rid or hide it! Keeping your place clean and simple is an easy trick to making it look more expensive.
